Theory + Lab: The New Grading Explained

By REC GradePoint

The days of Theory and Lab being separate subjects are mostly gone. In the current regulations, REC uses "Integrated Courses". This means a single subject code covers both the lecture hall and the laboratory.

Why the Change?

Engineers need to apply what they learn. By forcing a combined grade, the college ensures you can't just memorize the textbook and ignore the practicals.

The Weightage Breakdown

For a typical integrated course, your internal mark is a weighted sum:

Formula: Total Internal = (Theory Score × Weight) + (Lab Score × Weight)

Example Calculation

Imagine a subject "Data Structures" with a 60:40 Theory:Lab split.

  1. Theory: You average 75% in CATs. (0.75 * 60 = 45 marks)
  2. Lab: You excel with 90%. (0.90 * 40 = 36 marks)

Total Internal = 45 + 36 = 81/100

Notice how the high lab score lifted the grade.

The "Fail One, Fail All" Rule

Warning: You usually must pass BOTH components individually. If you fail the Lab, you fail the entire subject, even if you scored 100 in Theory.

That is why we built our calculator to handle these specific splits automatically.
